Perspectives

Opinion pieces on Indian weddings. Uncomfortable questions, real numbers, and the stuff polite guides leave out. Not every idea here is consensus - that's the point.

Why we publish Perspectives

Almost everything written about Indian weddings is written to sell you something — a venue, a photographer, a “10 trending mandap ideas” listicle. Perspectives is the opposite corner of the site. It's where we say the quieter, harder thing: that a dowry “gift” illegal since 1961 still gets quoted like a spec sheet; that the average ₹40 lakh wedding budget hides choices nobody examines out loud; that some traditions survive because they're meaningful and others only because no one asked why.

These aren't hot takes for the sake of it. The rule for anything published here is that it has to be grounded — real numbers, named examples, a calculator you can actually plug your own situation into — not abstract moralising. You won't agree with all of it, and that's the point. A wedding is one of the largest financial and emotional decisions a family makes; it deserves at least a few pieces that don't just flatter it.
