Quick Answer

How do I plan a full wedding menu across every function?

Pick a regional preset (North Indian, Bengali, South Indian, Gujarati and seven more), tell it your guest count and which functions need catering, and it builds a complete menu with no dish repeated across functions unless you lock it in. Lock favourites, swap or remove anything else, then export a quantity sheet and caterer brief.

Why the same menu across every function falls flat

Mehendi, sangeet, the wedding feast and the reception usually share a guest list that overlaps more than hosts expect - the same aunts and cousins eat at all four. Serving the exact same paneer-chicken-dal rotation at every meal is the single most common catering complaint we hear from recently married couples. This planner treats each function as its own menu by default: a dish picked for sangeet is removed from the pool for the wedding feast, unless you deliberately lock it in because it is a must-have.

The flip side: locking too aggressively defeats the point. A good rule of thumb is to lock at most one or two signature dishes per function (a family recipe, a regional specialty) and let the planner rotate everything else.

Frequently asked questions

How many dishes should an Indian wedding buffet have?

A standard spread runs about 6 starters, 6 mains, 2 dals, 2 rice dishes, 4 breads and 4 desserts per function, plus welcome drinks and accompaniments - roughly 30 dishes total. A lean budget menu can work with half that; a lavish reception spread with live counters can run 45+.

How do I plan a menu for guests with different diets?

Aim for at least 2 options per course for any dietary group you expect in real numbers - Jain, vegan, gluten-free or non-veg. The coverage table below flags any course with fewer than 2 options once you tell it which diets to check for.

Should every wedding function have the same menu?

No - repeating the exact same dishes across mehendi, sangeet and the wedding feast is a common complaint from guests who attend all of them. This planner avoids repeating a dish across functions unless you explicitly lock it in.

How much food should I order per guest?

Indian wedding buffets typically plan for 550-650g of food per adult across all courses, adjusted down slightly as you add more dishes per course (each extra dish gets a smaller serving) and up by 10-15% as a buffer against under-ordering.
