Quick Answer

How do you create a wedding hashtag?

Combine your last name with a short prefix or suffix - #MeetTheMillers, #HitchedHarts, #TheMillersEverAfter - or blend both first names into one word if you would rather skip the surname. The best wedding hashtags stay under 20 characters, are easy to spell out loud, and are not already in use on Instagram. This generator runs seven styles at once from your names and returns 30 to 50 options so you are picking from a real shortlist instead of staring at a blank page.

Star the ones you like to build a shortlist, copy any hashtag with one tap, or download a print-ready sign with your top pick.

The seven styles, explained

Every run tries all seven. A style that cannot produce anything for your names just does not render a card - no filler, no forced results.

Last name classic

#MeetTheMillers

Prefix and suffix templates wrapped around your surname - the reliable default. "Meet The Millers" told a thousand photo booths what to caption, and it still works.

Last name pun

#HereComeTheHarts

A hand-picked pun on your exact surname, when one exists. This is a curated list, not a guess - if your name is not on file, this card just does not show up, rather than forcing something that reads wrong.

Wordplay

#HitchedHarts

Wedding idioms - tying the knot, hitched, ever after - with your surname worked in.

Alliteration

#PerfectlyPairedParkers

Two wedding words that share your surname’s starting sound, for a tag with some rhythm to it.

Date based

#Millers2027

Your wedding month or year folded into the tag, for couples who want the date built in.

Location

#AustinWedsTheMillers

Your city or state worked into a wedding hashtag - a nice touch for a destination wedding.

First name fusion

#JenAndMike

A blended portmanteau of both first names. It is the lowest-weighted style in the mix, so do not expect it to dominate your results - but it is there if a name blend is more your speed than a surname play.

How to pick and check your hashtag

Pick one hashtag under 20 characters that is easy to spell out loud - if a guest has to ask how to spell it, it is too clever. Then check it is actually free: open Instagram, tap Search, switch to the Tags tab, and type it in. If you see more than a handful of unrelated posts, or another couple with a wedding in the last year or two, pick a different one from your results.

Once you have a winner, use it everywhere and stop second-guessing it. A hashtag that changes between the invitation and the reception splits your photos across two searches instead of one.

Where to use it

Reception sign

A framed or printed sign near the guest book or entrance.

Invitation insert

A small card alongside the invitation, printed or digital.

Wedding website

In the header or footer of your wedding website, where every guest will see it before the big day.

Reception card

Printed on programs, napkins, or table cards.

Guest book

A reminder on the guest book page to tag photos with the hashtag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this wedding hashtag generator really free?

Yes. No signup, no email, no watermark. Enter your names and get 30 to 50 hashtags immediately - generate as many rounds as you want.

Do I need a last name to use it?

You need at least one last name (shared, or one for each partner if you are keeping different names). Five of the seven styles are built around a surname, so this is where most of your options come from.

What if my last name does not have a pun on file?

The Last Name Pun card just will not show up for your names. The generator never guesses a phonetic pun - a bad guess reads worse than no result at all, so that card only appears when there is a real, hand-picked match.

How many hashtags should we actually use?

Pick one primary hashtag and use it everywhere - the invitation, the wedding website, the reception sign. Splitting your photos across two or three hashtags means nobody sees the full set from any one search.

How do I check if a wedding hashtag is already taken?

Open Instagram, tap Search, switch to the Tags tab, and type your hashtag in. If it comes back with unrelated posts or another wedding from the last year or two, try a different one from your results.

Can I get more options if I do not like the first batch?

Yes - hit Refresh on any card for a fresh batch in that style, excluding anything you have already seen. Switching the vibe (Classic, Funny, Punny, Rustic, Modern, Romantic) and generating again gives you a noticeably different set too.

Does it work if we have different last names?

Yes - tap "We have different last names" under the last name field and enter both. Every surname-based style runs once per name and the results are combined.

What is the character limit on a wedding hashtag?

There is no hard limit on Instagram, but hashtags in your results stay between 6 and 30 characters - long enough to be recognizable, short enough that guests do not misspell it from memory.

Can I include our wedding date or city?

Yes - open "Make it more personal" to add a wedding date, city, or state. That unlocks the Date Based and Location styles, which do not run without them.

Is this the same as the couple-name hashtag generator?

No - this tool is built around last names and US-style wordplay. If you want fused-first-name hashtags (like blending two first names into one), that is the primary focus of our couple name combiner instead.

Can I download a printable sign with my hashtag?

Yes - once you have results, "Download hashtag sign" renders a print-ready image with your top hashtag that you can print or share as-is.

Does this store our names anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser - there is no server call, no account, and nothing is saved except your starred hashtags, which stay on your own device.

Use it everywhere

Put your hashtag on the invitation, the website, and the sign.

Once you have picked a favorite, the fastest way to get guests using it is to make it hard to miss - on the wedding website, the invitation, and a sign at the reception. The Weddingkart guest list app keeps your invitations, RSVPs, and guest list in one place, so the hashtag can ride along with every message you send.
