Do I invite everyone to the puja or just the meal?

Just the meal, for most people. The puja happens at the muhurat — often early morning — in a house that is not yet set up, so keep that list to family and the closest friends, usually 15–30 people. Everyone else gets invited to lunch or the evening get-together. Send two different messages: the puja message carries the muhurat time, the meal message only carries the meal time. Nobody feels excluded from a puja they never knew the timing of.

How do I share the new address cleanly?

Write the full address inside the invitation itself — flat number, building, road, area, city — plus one landmark people actually know. Then send the Google Maps pin as a separate message immediately after. Never rely on the pin alone: guests forward invitations to spouses and drivers, and a forwarded message without the pin strands people. Text address in the invite, pin right behind it.

What if the muhurat is very early morning?

Say so plainly and give people an out. Something like: the muhurat is at 6:40 AM — we understand it is early, so if mornings are hard, please join us for breakfast at 9 or lunch at 12:30. Guests appreciate the honesty, and you avoid half-hearted RSVPs. The people who matter for the puja will come at 6:40 regardless.

Should the invitation be in Hindi or English?

Match the reader, not the occasion. Grandparents, buas, mamas — Hindi in Devanagari, it lands as respect. Cousins and colleagues — Hinglish or English is fine. Many families send the Hindi version to the family WhatsApp group and an English one to office friends. Sending one language to everyone is the only real mistake.

How many days before should I send griha pravesh invitations?

7–10 days before for the main invitation, and a reminder the evening before. Griha pravesh dates are usually fixed by the panditji only a few weeks out, so nobody expects a month's notice. Less than 5 days feels last-minute for anyone who has to travel; more than two weeks and people forget. The day-before reminder with the address pin again is what actually gets people there.

Is a WhatsApp message enough, or do I need a printed card?

For a griha pravesh, WhatsApp is enough and is now the norm — this is a home function, not a wedding. Two exceptions: elders in the family should get a phone call in addition to the message, and if your community expects a physical invite for the family deity ritual, a handful of printed cards for the eldest relatives covers it. Everyone else reads it on their phone anyway.

What a Griha Pravesh Invitation Message Must Include

Five things, every time: who is inviting (family name, not just yours), the date, the muhurat time, the full new address, and what exactly the guest is invited to. That last one matters more than people think — puja at 8 AM and lunch at 12:30 are different invitations, and guests plan their day around which one they got.

Put the muhurat in bold — it is the one detail guests screenshot. On WhatsApp, wrap it in asterisks: *शुभ मुहूर्त: प्रातः 8:15 बजे*. Do the same for the address. Everything else can be plain text.

For the address: write it out in full with a landmark, because your invitation will be forwarded to spouses and drivers who never see your chat. Then send the Google Maps pin as the very next message. Text plus pin, always both.

One more reality check before the samples: almost every family runs two guest lists. A short puja list — parents, siblings, the closest friends, the people who will sit through the havan. And a longer meal list — neighbours, colleagues, the wider circle who come for lunch and to see the house. Write two messages. The samples below are grouped so you can pick one for each list.
