Quick Answer

What is the two-step verification PIN on the WhatsApp Business API?

It is a six-digit code attached to your registered phone number that must be supplied when the number is registered, re-registered or moved between platforms. It is not a login password and nobody types it day to day; it exists so that someone who gains access to your Meta assets still cannot take the number elsewhere. If you lose it you can reset it from the WhatsApp Manager, but you may face a waiting period before the number can be re-registered.

Six digits that decide who can move your number.

What it actually protects

The PIN guards the registration of the number itself. Someone with access to your Business Manager still cannot register that number on another platform without it, which is the attack it is designed to stop.

Because it is almost never needed, it is almost always lost. The one moment you need it is the moment you are changing providers, which is usually the moment you are already under time pressure.

Treat it as a business record

Keep it in the password manager the company controls, not in an agency WhatsApp thread or a developer notes file. Numbers get stranded when the only person who knew the PIN has left.

If it is gone, you can reset it through the WhatsApp Manager, but plan for a delay. Meta applies a cooling-off period on some resets specifically to make number theft harder, and it will not be waived because your campaign goes out on Friday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the PIN to send messages?

No. It is required only for registering, re-registering or migrating the number, not for day-to-day sending.

What if I forget the two-step PIN?

You can reset it from the WhatsApp Manager, but expect a waiting period before the number can be re-registered. Plan migrations with that in mind.
